Above, an Arbor Diana has grown from copper metal suspended in silver nitrate solution. It consists of dendritic crystals of silver. Mercury can be used instead of copper, and Prof's Maschmann & Hanstein thought the formation of the Arbor Diana was influenced by the Earth's magnetic field -

An un-Royal Institution like mistake- "precipitation of the mercury" read - "crystallisation of silver."
