Quantum Levitation

A wafer of sapphire is coated with a 1µm layer of yttrium barium copper oxide and cooled in liquid nitrogen. The YBa2Cu3O7-x becomes superconducting. Neodymium magnets levitate the superconductor. However, because the superconducting film is so thin, the magnetic field is able to penetrate it as flux tubes at the grain boundaries, contrary to the ideal Meissner effect. The flux tubes lock the disc into position, resisting spatial movement which would change their location.

Unrelated to this post, below is an example of
eclectic science esoterica

When the concrete was being poured for the Boulder Dam (AKA Hoover Dam), an ammonia
refrigeration plant provided ice-cold water to tubes within the dam. The water removed the heat
evolved from the chemical reactions whilst the concrete set. Castor canadensis does not
use cooling during its dam construction.
