A "normal" lightning stroke propagates as negative stepped leaders fan out downwards, with one leader eventually connecting with a small positive leader from the ground. The negative charge is then dumped to ground along the short - the bright bolt of lightning. More bolts of electricity use the ionised channel as charge is dumped from further volumes of the cloud. The lightning causes a charge imbalance, which induces positive leaders to propagate and fan upwards from tall objects - upward lightning. In this video by Tom Warner you can see the negative leaders creating a cloud to ground lightning strike on the left. This induces positive leader development from nearby towers, with consequent upward lightning. The second video is of spectacular lightning from the CN Tower, Toronto.
