In 1874 Elisha Gray patented an unusual transducer. He had discovered that sound is produced from living flesh when subject to electrical discharges. How Mr. Gray heard the musical tones from the musculature of his human test subject, over the screams of pain caused by the induction coil, is not made clear....

It is to be hoped that the test subject was only being electrocuted by a small Ruhmkorff induction coil. An example coil, shown below, would be extremely unpleasant. Following that, the 1.2MV Spottiswoode coil (of 1877) is shown, which would instantly kill.
