James Ballantyne Hannay's efforts toward diamond synthesis were of a very hazardous nature - "The continued strain on the nerves, watching the temperature of the furnace, and in a state of tension in case of an explosion, induces a nervous state which is extremely weakening, and when the explosion occurs it sometimes shakes one so severely that sickness supervenes."
The scotsman heated mixtures of hydrocarbons, Dippel's bone oil and lithium at red heat in sealed wrought-iron tubes. Most exploded, but some didn't... Here's his account -
