Before the invention of the cyclotron by Lawrence (patent filed 1932, document here), atom smashers required extremely high voltages in order to accelerate atomic particles. Harnessing lightning, tesla coils, Van de Graaf generators and voltage doublers are all described in the following chapter from Lawrence and His Laboratory: A History of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Volume 1. By John L.
