In order to electroplate the dead, Dr. Varlot first had to make the skin of a corpse electrically conductive. Here a child's cadaver has been sprayed with silver nitrate solution and has been placed in the bell jar. This is evacuated, and then a solution of white phosphorus in carbon disulphide is introduced. The vapours from this reduce the silver to a metallic state, thus rendering the body conductive and ready for electroplating with copper.
